Hygiene & Safety

Hygiene & Safety at Balon Circle

A tattoo is a medical-grade procedure: it breaks the skin and places pigment into the dermis. Done correctly, it is safe. At Balon Circle in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, safety is not an afterthought — it is the foundation of everything we do. This page explains, in plain language, exactly how we protect you, and how you can recognise a clean studio anywhere in the world.

Is tattooing safe?

The risk in tattooing does not come from the art — it comes from poor hygiene. Because the needle crosses the skin barrier, unsterile equipment or contaminated ink can transmit infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or bacterial skin infections. The World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are clear: when single-use equipment, proper sterilization, and aseptic technique are used, that risk is controlled. Every protocol on this page exists to keep it that way. (New to tattoos? Start with our Guide.)

Sterilization & our autoclave

Anything reusable that could contact skin or blood is sterilized — not merely wiped. Wiping with alcohol is disinfection, not sterilization. We use a steam autoclave, which the CDC describes as the most widely used and most dependable sterilization method. Our cycle reaches 121–134°C under pressure, with air fully removed so steam penetrates every surface.

Sterilization is a verified process, not a guess. We monitor every cycle three ways: the machine’s own time–temperature–pressure log; chemical indicators that confirm a pack reached temperature; and — most importantly — biological spore tests, the gold standard, which prove that even the most heat-resistant bacterial spores have been killed. Spore-test records are kept and available on request.

Single-use needles & cartridges

Needles and cartridges at Balon Circle are single-use and pre-sterilized. We open the sealed packet in front of you, and it goes into a sharps container the moment we finish. Ink caps, razors, and gloves are single-use too; ink poured into a cap is never returned to the bottle. Nothing that touches one client ever touches another.

Ink safety (REACH, Turkey, vegan)

We use sealed, professionally manufactured inks with full ingredient labelling. In the EU, tattoo inks are regulated under the REACH restriction, which limits over 4,000 hazardous chemicals and sets strict concentration limits to make colours safer — its aim is not to ban tattooing, but to make it safer. In Turkey, chemicals are governed by KKDİK, Turkey’s REACH-equivalent regulation, and cosmetic-type products fall under the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (TİTCK). We choose inks that meet these modern safety standards, and we never dilute ink with non-sterile water. Vegan inks — free of animal-derived ingredients such as bone char, animal glycerin, gelatin and shellac — are available on request.

Clean station & cross-contamination control

Before you sit down, your station is already prepared. Every surface we might touch — the machine, the clip cord, spray bottles, the armrest, the lamp — is covered with single-use barrier film, and the machine is bagged. Surfaces that aren’t barriered are disinfected with a product proven against bloodborne pathogens, left for the full contact time. We wash our hands and wear fresh nitrile gloves, changed between every client and any time they’re compromised; latex-free gloves are available for sensitive skin. When we tear down, single-use barriers go straight to the bin and sharps to the sharps container.

Licensed & hygiene-certified

Balon Circle operates with a municipal workplace operating licence (İşyeri Açma ve Çalışma Ruhsatı), and our artists hold the hygiene certificate required for tattoo studios under Turkey’s Hygiene Training Regulation. Documents are available on request.

How to spot a clean studio

Wherever you are in the world, look for: sealed needle packets opened in front of you; an autoclave with spore-test logs; barrier film on equipment; fresh gloves; single-use ink caps and razors; a sharps container; a clean, organised, separate workstation; and a visible licence and hygiene certificate.

Questions to ask before you book

Don’t be shy — a good studio welcomes these:

  • Are the needles single-use and opened in front of me?
  • Do you autoclave reusable tools and spore-test the autoclave?
  • May I see your licence and hygiene certificate?
  • Which ink brands do you use, and are they sealed and labelled?
  • How do you prevent cross-contamination?
  • What aftercare will I need? (See our Aftercare page.)

Before we start, we ask about your medical history, allergies, medications, and skin conditions, and you sign an informed consent form that also records the inks we use — so anything can be traced if needed. Some conditions call for extra care: if you take blood thinners, are immunosuppressed, or have a mole or skin lesion in the area, tell us. If there’s any doubt about an allergy, we’ll ask you to see a dermatologist first. Your honesty keeps you safe.

18+ and your data (KVKK)

We tattoo adults aged 18 and over only, and we ask for ID. Your health information is sensitive: under Turkey’s data-protection law (KVKK), health data are a special category, processed only with your explicit consent, kept secure, and used only for your tattoo care.

Common Questions

  • Is getting a tattoo safe?

A tattoo is safe when done in a licensed studio with sterile, single-use equipment and proper hygiene. Risk comes from unsterile needles, contaminated ink, or poor technique — not from the art itself.

  • How do you sterilize equipment?

Reusable tools are cleaned, then steam-sterilized in an autoclave at 121–134°C, and verified with biological spore tests. Needles and cartridges are single-use and never sterilized for reuse.

  • Are the needles single-use?

Yes. Sealed, pre-sterilized needles and cartridges are opened in front of you and discarded into a sharps container after one use.

  • What inks do you use?

Sealed, professionally manufactured, fully labelled inks that meet modern EU REACH and Turkish (KKDİK/TİTCK) safety standards. Vegan options are available on request.

  • Is the studio licensed?

Yes. Balon Circle holds a municipal workplace operating licence and our artists hold the hygiene certificate required for tattoo studios in Turkey. Documents are available on request.

  • Can I get a tattoo if I am under 18?

No. We tattoo adults aged 18 and over only, and we ask for ID.

  • What if I have allergies or a health condition?

Tell us before booking. We screen with a health questionnaire and informed consent form. If there is any doubt about an allergy, we ask you to consult a dermatologist first.

  • How do you protect my personal data?

Under Turkey's data-protection law (KVKK), health data are a special category processed only with your explicit consent, kept secure, and used only for your tattoo care.
