Tattoo FAQ — Istanbul (Nişantaşı)

We’ve grouped the most common tattoo questions and answered them honestly — from pain to healing, prices to booking. If you can’t find your answer, message us on WhatsApp or fill in the request form; during studio hours we usually reply within 2 hours.

Pain

Does getting a tattoo hurt?

Yes, a little — but most people find it far more manageable than they feared. A tattoo needle works only in the upper layers of skin, so the sensation is usually described as a hot scratching or fine stinging rather than deep pain, and many people relax once the first few minutes pass. How much you feel depends on placement, the size and detail of the design, and your own pain threshold. Your artist will check in with you throughout and can pause whenever you need a break.

Which body areas hurt the most and the least?

Generally, the most sensitive spots are those with thin skin, many nerve endings, and bone close to the surface — ribs, sternum, spine, ankles, feet, hands and fingers, neck, and the inner arm. The most comfortable areas tend to be those with more muscle and cushioning, such as the outer upper arm, forearm, outer thigh, calf, and shoulder. If it's your first tattoo and you're nervous about pain, these padded areas are a kind place to start. We're happy to advise on placement during your consultation.

How can I make the pain easier to handle?

Come well-rested, hydrated, and having eaten a proper meal beforehand — low blood sugar and exhaustion lower your pain tolerance. Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning painkillers (like aspirin/ibuprofen) for about 24 hours before, since they increase bleeding and can affect the result. Breathing calmly and not tensing the area genuinely helps. If you'd like to discuss numbing options, raise it at consultation — some topical products can affect how skin takes ink, so we'll guide you on what's appropriate.

What does a tattoo actually feel like?

People most often compare it to a cat scratch, a warm stinging, a mild sunburn-like rawness, or many tiny bee stings during fine detail. Lining can feel sharp and precise; shading often feels warmer and more like scratching. Bony areas vibrate more and feel sharper. It's rarely a constant, unbearable pain — it comes and goes with the work, and knowing it's temporary makes it easier.

Appointment & Deposit

How do I book an appointment?

Booking is simple and personal: message us on WhatsApp at +90 (212) 993 2087 or fill in our structured request form on the contact page. Do you take walk-ins?

We're open 7 days a week, 10:00–22:00, and walk-ins may be possible for smaller pieces depending on the day and artist availability — but we can't guarantee a slot. To save a wasted trip, message us on WhatsApp (+90 (212) 993 2087) with your idea before you come, and we'll let you know what's free.

Is there a deposit?

Yes — a deposit confirms your appointment and is deducted from your final price. We'll go over the details with you when you book, always transparently and in advance via WhatsApp or the request form — no surprises. Reach us at the contact page.

How do I reschedule or cancel?

Just let us know as early as you can via WhatsApp (+90 (212) 993 2087) or the contact form, and we'll find a new time that works. Giving us notice means we can offer your slot to someone else and get you rebooked smoothly.

How much does a tattoo cost, and what determines the price?

We don't publish fixed prices, because every tattoo is unique — like a tailored piece, the price depends on size, placement, the complexity and detail of the design, color versus black-and-grey, the artist, and how many sessions it needs. Rather than a misleading number, we give you a clear, honest quote after a short consultation. Learn how our pricing and process work, or message us on WhatsApp with your idea.

Healing & Fading

How long does a tattoo take to heal?

The outer layer of skin typically appears healed within about 2–3 weeks, but the deeper layers continue to settle and stabilize the ink for several months — full healing can take much longer. Expect some redness and mild swelling at first, then a peeling/flaking and itching phase — don't pick or scratch; let the flakes fall naturally. Healing time varies with the size, placement, your skin, and your aftercare. Our full day-by-day guidance is on the aftercare page.

Why do tattoos fade, and can I prevent it?

All tattoos soften over the years, and the biggest accelerant is sun exposure (UV breaks down pigment). Once fully healed, dermatologists recommend protecting your tattoo with a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, keeping skin moisturized with a water-based (not petroleum-based) moisturizer, and avoiding tanning beds. Placement matters too — hands, fingers, and feet naturally fade faster due to friction. Good aftercare during healing is the single best thing you can do for long-term vibrancy.

Do you offer touch-ups?

Yes, when needed — touch-up needs are assessed after the tattoo is fully healed, since fresh tattoos can look patchy mid-healing and then settle. Some areas and styles are more prone to needing a small refresh. Talk to us about touch-up details during your consultation, or message us once you've healed.

Can I go in the sun, swim, or work out while healing?

Not at first. Avoid direct sun, swimming pools, the sea, hot tubs, saunas, and the hammam until the tattoo is fully healed (usually at least 2–4 weeks), since water and UV raise the risk of infection and fading. Hold off on heavy workouts and heavy sweating in the early days too, and wear loose clothing over the area. See our aftercare page for the full timeline.

Hygiene & Safety

Is it safe and hygienic to get a tattoo at your studio?

Yes — hygiene is non-negotiable for us. We use single-use, pre-sterilized needles and disposable supplies that are opened in front of you and discarded after your session, fresh gloves, and disinfected surfaces and barriers between every client. Tattooing breaks the skin, so these standards genuinely matter for your safety. You can read exactly how we work on our hygiene & trust page.

Related: Hygiene & safety

Do you use new needles for every client?

Always. Needles and cartridges are single-use: they come pre-sterilized in sealed packaging, we open them in front of you, use them only on you, and dispose of them immediately in a sharps container. Ink is poured into fresh single-use caps for each client. Reusing needles is never acceptable, and we never do it.

Is tattoo ink safe? What about allergies?

We use professional-grade inks and maintain strict hygiene, which keeps risks low for most people. Allergic reactions are uncommon but possible, more often with certain colored pigments; if you have sensitive skin, known pigment allergies, or skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis in the area, tell us at consultation so we can advise (a patch test or doctor's sign-off may be sensible). More on our materials and standards.

Do you offer vegan ink?

Vegan-friendly options are widely available, and many professional inks are already vegan. Some conventional inks and supplies use animal-derived ingredients (for example glycerin, gelatin, shellac, or bone char in some blacks), and items like certain stencil papers or razors can also be non-vegan. If this matters to you, tell us when you book and we'll confirm vegan ink and supplies for your session. See our materials.

Can I get a tattoo if I'm on medication or have a health condition?

Please check with your doctor first and tell us at consultation. Some situations call for extra caution or aren't advisable — for example pregnancy or breastfeeding, blood-thinning medication, immune-system conditions, diabetes that isn't well controlled, or active skin problems in the area. We will always prioritize your safety over completing a session, and we may ask you to get medical clearance.

Design & Consultation

How does the design process work?

It starts with a conversation. You tell us your idea, references, placement, and rough size; our artist then develops a design tailored to your body and the style you want. We refine it together until it feels right, and you'll see the design before any needle touches your skin. To understand the full journey from idea to healed tattoo, see our pricing & process page.

Can I bring my own design or reference images?

Absolutely — references, sketches, and inspiration images are welcome and genuinely helpful. Our artists will adapt your idea so it sits well on your body and ages beautifully, rather than copying another artist's exact piece. If you arrive without a fixed idea, that's fine too; we can build a concept with you. Browse our artists and styles to find the right fit.

Will I see the design before you start?

Yes. You'll always review and approve the artwork and its placement (we use a stencil to position it) before tattooing begins, and we can adjust size, detail, or position until you're happy. Getting this right matters to us — a tattoo is permanent, and we want you fully comfortable before we start.

How do I choose the right artist and style?

Look through each artist's recent work and find the style that matches what you want — fine line, blackwork, minimal, micro-realism, and more. The best match is an artist who already specializes in your style. Our artists hub and style pages make this easy, and if you're unsure, message us and we'll point you to the right person.

Preparation

How should I prepare before my appointment?

Get a good night's sleep, drink plenty of water in the days before, and eat a solid meal within a couple of hours of your session. Wear comfortable, loose clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed — and that you don't mind getting a little ink on. Bring a valid photo ID. For longer sessions, a snack and water are smart. For more on caring for the tattoo afterwards, see our aftercare guide.

What should I avoid before getting tattooed?

Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand — it thins your blood, increases bleeding, and can dilute the ink and affect healing. Skip blood-thinning painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen in that window (acetaminophen/paracetamol is generally gentler, but check with your doctor). Don't arrive sunburned, hungover, or running on no sleep, and go easy on caffeine so you're not jittery. Don't shave the area yourself if you're unsure — your artist will prep the skin.

Should I eat before my tattoo?

Yes — please don't come on an empty stomach. Eating a balanced meal with protein and complex carbohydrates keeps your blood sugar stable, which helps you avoid feeling lightheaded or faint and raises your pain tolerance during the session. For longer pieces, bring a snack for breaks. Stay hydrated, but don't over-drink water right before so you're not interrupting the session.

Cover-Up

Can you cover up an old tattoo?

Often, yes — but it depends on the existing tattoo's size, colors, darkness, and placement. Darker and larger old tattoos are more limiting and may need a bolder or darker new design, sometimes after some fading. The best first step is to send us a clear, well-lit photo of the current tattoo along with your idea, and we'll tell you honestly what's realistic. Reach us via the contact page.

Can a tattoo cover a scar?

Sometimes — many scars can be tattooed once they are fully healed and stable, which often means waiting roughly 12–18 months after the injury or surgery. Scar tissue behaves differently from normal skin and may hold ink unevenly, so this needs an in-person assessment. Send a photo and we'll advise on timing and what's possible.

Should I get a cover-up or laser removal?

It depends on your goal. A cover-up redesigns over the existing ink and is often the faster route if you simply want something you love in that spot. Laser removal (done by a medical/laser provider, not at the studio) breaks down ink over multiple sessions and is useful for fully removing a piece or lightening it first so a cleaner cover-up is possible. We're happy to talk through which path suits your tattoo during a consultation.

Age & ID (18+)

What is the minimum age to get a tattoo?

You must be 18. Balon Circle tattoos adults only — this is our firm policy and we apply it without exception. Please bring a valid government-issued photo ID (passport, national ID, or driver's licence) to your appointment so we can confirm your age.

Can a minor get a tattoo with parental consent?

No. We do not tattoo anyone under 18, even with a parent or guardian present and consenting. This is both an ethical standard widely held by reputable studios and the responsible approach to a permanent decision on a still-developing body. We'd rather you wait and get something you'll love for life.

What ID do I need to bring?

A valid, unexpired government photo ID showing your date of birth — passport, Turkish national ID (kimlik), or driver's licence. International visitors should bring a passport. We verify age at the start of every appointment, so please don't leave it at the hotel.

Tourist & English

Do you speak English?

Yes — our team assists international clients in English, from your first message through consultation, the session itself, and aftercare. We regularly welcome visitors from around the world, so you'll be comfortable discussing your idea, placement, and care.

Can I get a tattoo while visiting Istanbul for just a few days?

Yes, and many of our clients do exactly that — but plan it smartly. Message us before you arrive (WhatsApp +90 (212) 993 2087 or the form) so we can agree the design and book your slot in advance; reputable studios fill up, especially in the busy season. Try to schedule the tattoo for early in your trip and at least a full day before you fly home, so it can settle. Our Istanbul tattoo guide walks tourists through the whole process.

Is getting a tattoo in Istanbul a good idea — and is it good value?

Istanbul has become one of the world's notable tattoo destinations, valued for skilled artists, English-speaking studios, and strong value for money — quality work here generally costs meaningfully less than equivalent work in Western Europe or North America, without compromising on standards. The key is choosing a reputable, hygienic studio (which is exactly what we focus on). See our Istanbul guide and hygiene page.

Can I fly after getting a tattoo?

Yes, it's generally fine to fly with a fresh tattoo as long as you care for it properly — flying itself isn't the risk; it's that your skin is more vulnerable, and dry cabin air, friction, and reduced hygiene en route can irritate a fresh wound. Where you can, allow about 36 hours (a day to a day and a half) before a flight, keep the area clean, moisturized and loosely covered, wear loose clothing, stay hydrated, and avoid resting the tattoo against shared surfaces. For longer or larger pieces, give it a little more time. Full aftercare-while-traveling tips are in our guide and aftercare page.

What to Bring

What should I bring to my appointment?

A valid photo ID (passport for international visitors), comfortable loose clothing suited to the placement, and — for longer sessions — a snack and water. You might also bring headphones or something to help you relax. Eat a proper meal beforehand and arrive well-rested and hydrated.

What should I wear?

Wear something comfortable and loose that gives easy access to the area being tattooed (for example shorts for a thigh piece, a vest/tank for a shoulder) and that you don't mind possibly getting a spot of ink on. Loose clothing also reduces friction on the fresh tattoo afterwards.

Can I bring a friend?

A friend for support is usually welcome — but please ask us in advance, as space at a boutique studio is limited and we want to keep the environment calm and hygienic for everyone. Let us know when you book.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, credit card, and bank transfer (IBAN). If you have any questions, message us on WhatsApp (+90 (212) 993 2087) or via the contact form.
