The Project Semicolon movement

The movement that gave the symbol its cultural meaning was founded in 2013 by Amy Bleuel, in memory of the father she lost to suicide and drawing on her own mental health struggles. In the summer of 2015 the movement reached global visibility as thousands shared photos of their semicolon tattoos, and that year it became a registered nonprofit.

Bleuel died in 2017. Her loss is a reminder not of the message’s lightness but of its seriousness: mental health struggles are ongoing, asking for support takes strength, and no one has to walk that road alone. The movement’s message lives on with the same simplicity: your story isn’t over.

The semicolon tattoo is worn in many layered ways today: as a mark of resolve after coming through a difficult chapter; as solidarity with people facing depression, anxiety or addiction; as a quiet memorial for those who have lost someone; or simply as the shortest possible writing of the sentence “I’m here, and I’m continuing.” The symbol’s strength is that its meaning belongs to the wearer — for some a deeply personal turning point, for others a broader stance of awareness and support.
